OXFORD United chief executive Tim Williams looked ahead to the sort of atmosphere that could be created in a brand-new stadium after the club’s play-off first leg victory.

The U’s beat Peterborough United 1-0 at Grenoble Road, and were backed by a passionate home crowd.

The Kassam Stadium, with its three sides, has its obvious shortcomings when it comes to creating an atmosphere, while United are looking to build a new home at The Triangle, south of Kidlington Roundabout, with the club’s licence agreement at the Kassam running out in 2026.

Williams said: “I look at what a new stadium could be, and I look at what a night like this could’ve been in a brand-new 16,000-seater stadium, and what that could look like.

“That doesn’t take away from what we did here. There’s a whole army of people who worked together to put this on, who brought all this together and made it happen.

“It just doesn’t happen by accident, and I want to thank every single one of them who made it happen.

“What you saw is the best of what we can do, and it what was incredible to see.

“What an incredible atmosphere. The noise and the singing were relentless throughout the game.

“It’s exactly what we need, and we need that week in, week out.”
