EDDIE Pepperell has made a strong start at St Andrews, holing half a dozen birdies on the opening day.

The Abingdon golfer got his Alfred Dunhill Links Championship underway at 11.01am yesterday morning, and sits 40th at the end of day one.

Pepperell finished the day four-under par, after birdies on the third and fifth holes.

A bogey followed at the ninth, before a trio of birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13.

Another birdie on the 16th was then rounded off with a bogey on the penultimate hole.

Pepperell finished the day seven shots behind the leader Romain Langasque, of France.

He tees off at 8.30am this morning, alongside Victor Perez.

Last time out, Pepperell earned his sixth top-20 finish in just two months, at the DS Automobiles Italian Open on September 18.

He carded a three-under par final round at the Italian Open, moving him to six-under for the tournament.

It saw Pepperell finish in a tie for 12th at Marco Simone GC, Rome, eight shots shy of winner Robert Macintyre.

Play at St Andrews, acknowledged as the ‘Home of Golf’, runs until October 2.
