OXFORD Stadium will host SGB Championship speedway in 2023.

Oxford Speedway promoter Jamie Courtney has confirmed Oxford Cheetahs will compete in the second tier again next year, with meetings remaining on Wednesday evenings.

The 34-year-old also revealed Sandy Lane is set to host an individual event, expected to take place next month, called the ‘Oxford Speedway Derby’.

“It’s exciting times ahead for the Oxford fans,” Courtney told the Oxford Mail after Oxford Chargers’ 60-29 win over Kent Royals last night.

“They not only got their speedway back, but they get it back for the following year as well, so it’s a great success.

“We looked at moving up to the Premiership but we had some tight time restraints on making a decision.

“The Championship’s a great league and the racing offers up great entertainment, like we’ve seen this season.

“We’ve seen great crowds, big credit to the fans for sticking by us.

“I know results haven’t gone our way all the time, but we’re trying our best and we’ll have a competitive team challenging for honours next year.”

Cheetahs finished ninth in the Championship this season, their first year back in the sport since 2007.

Arrangements for the Oxford Speedway Derby will be finalised once Chargers know whether their campaign will continue into next month, with their fate now out of their hands.

The National Development League team thrashed Kent 60-29 in their final fixture of the regular season and will qualify for the play-offs if Belle Vue Colts lose by seven points or more at Armadale Devils on September 30.

If Chargers hold on to fourth place and reach the end-of-term competition, their meeting will take priority over the individual event.

Courtney said: “It’ll have a few different formats, something quite exciting.

“We’ll be pulling some top-level riders in to entertain the fans.”

Chargers finished the regular season with a flourish, sealing victory with three races to spare.

The teams traded 5-1s in the opening two heats, but the hosts edged ahead with a 4-2 in the fourth and never looked back.

Captain Jordan Jenkins led the way with five wins on the way to a 17+1 haul, while there were more strong performances from guest rider Adam Roynon (14+1) and Henry Atkins (13+1).

Courtney intends for Chargers to compete in the same division in 2023, but the club must wait for the National League AGM to take place.
