OXFORD United’s record season ticket sales have smashed through the 5,000-barrier.
With a week still remaining until Michael Appleton’s side kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at home to Chesterfield, the figure is 750 seats higher than the previous best at the Kassam Stadium.
The 5,000-mark was broken by a big order from OxVox, the U’s independent supporters’ trust.
The ‘One of our Own’ campaign raised more than £5,000 to buy 60 season tickets to allow children in the county’s care system to watch United.
Greig Box Turnbull, the club’s managing director, said: “It’s another great example of the togetherness at the club right now.
“OxVox asked supporters to help some of the most vulnerable children in the county and the response has been overwhelming.”
He added: “Breaking the 5,000 season ticket sale barrier is magnificent from the Yellow Army and there should be a fantastic atmosphere for the first game as we get the season under way.”
In last season’s League One, nine of the 24 clubs had average home gates of less than 5,000.
