ST Edward’s and Abingdon warmed up for this week’s National Schools’ Regatta with encouraging wins, writes JOHN WIGGINS.

Abingdon triumphed in the intermediate 2 (IM2) race at the Nottingham City Regatta, while St Edward’s landed the senior eights and the boys double of Jonathan Evans and Karl Reiger won their novice pots in a double scull.

Wallingford’s Dan Harvey and Charlie Newbould were victorious in the IM2 double sculls.

In the Masters Regatta, held over a shortened 1,000m course, Abingdon claimed three successes.

Helen Gray and Elly Kilsby took the novice A women’s double, while their Masters B quad of Karen Roberts, Nikki Reeves, Clare Doubleday and Beverley Ashton also triumphed.

Karen Roberts and Tim Baker formed half of the mixed D quad, City of Oxford’s Nick Stargardt and Mary Murray completing the crew.

St Edward’s enjoyed more glory in the Thames Ditton Regatta, thanks to their J14 boys octuple and J14 girls, who took the plate event.

At the Worcester Spring Regatta, Oxford Blues, Tom Swartz and Will Geffen helped the Keble M1 crew along to victory in both the Elite and Senior eights.

The Geffen family had much to cheer as Will’s younger brother, Harry, won the J13 double scull for The Dragon School with Charlie Rosen.

From their four finals, Magdalen College School had three wins – the J14 quad, J15 double comprising Max Bond and Nick Monaco, and Alex Sheard in the J18 single.

Former Abingdon pupil and current Oxford Brookes student Jamie Copus confirmed his return to form with another sculling victory in Germany at the two-day, International Huegel Regatta, Essen.

Copus comfortably won the U23 lightweight single and then combined with Zak Lee Green to take silver.

Brookes’ Ben Reeves won gold in the U23 lightweight coxless four, while Annie Withers and Suzie Dear triumphed in their coxless four.

Wallingford’s lightweight women were also in the spotlight, Brianna Stubbs just pipping Ellie Piggott as they finished third and fourth in the lightweight final before combining to win gold in the quad scull.
