NEW Oxford University captain George Messum admitted that being chosen to lead the team he only joined last September had been a daunting experience, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

The former Loughborough University and England Students captain was elected to replace outgoing skipper Jacob Taylor on Monday night following a lengthy vote by his teammates.

“It was a very intense process, but it’s humbling to have been recognised by my peers,” he said.

“Each candidate was given 15-20 minutes to speak about their vision for the club in depth, which gave everyone a chance to see some different perspectives.

“The whole process took about four or five hours and it was completely nerve-wracking.

“It was probably the hardest interview I’ve ever done, but it should stand me in good stead because nothing I do in the future is likely to be as hard as that.”

And the No 8 has been impressed by qualities throughout the squad.

He said: “I think it’s a very characteristic of this club that there’s a real strength of leadership throughout.

“I intend to lead from the front with my own performances on the field, but I also want to create an environment which encourages the personal development of everyone in the squad.”
