CROCODILE Dundee, Dame Edna Everage and other Antipodean celebrities put in an appearance at the annual Fritwell carnival in July 1988.

The characters were among the many to be found on the carnival parade floats which excelled the efforts of previous years.

The carnival's theme that year was "countries".

China was the subject of the prizewinning float entered by the 1st Fritwell Brownie Guide Pack.

Their leader, Susan Todd, said: "A lot of hard work went into the float.

"But the main idea is to have a bit of fun and foster a community spirit, which is what the carnival achieves."

Australia, with Dame Edna, Sir Les Patterson and a painting of the Sydney Opera House, was the choice of the 1st Fritwell Scouts, Cub Scouts and Beavers.

A rival Australian float was entered by Fritwell Youth Club.

Their Dame Edna was the local vicar, the Rev John Thompson.

Fritwell Women's Institute took the Road to Morocco.

The days of the American Wild West were revived by members of the Fritwell Angling Club.
