It was a good day for the Lib Dems who have strengthened their position on West Oxfordshire District Council following the local elections.

The council remains under no overall control with the Lib Dems the biggest party after winning three extra wards to give it 21 seats.

Labour and the Greens gained one each while the Conservatives lost five of the seven wards they had been defending.

There are now the lowest number of Conservatives on the council in its 50-year history.

West Oxfordshire District Council is run by the West Oxfordshire Alliance made up of the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Green groups.

They formed a coalition after the Conservatives lost control of it for the first time in 22 years following the 2022 local elections.

Lib Dem leader Andy Graham said: "This is the best result the Lib Dems have ever had in West Oxfordshire.

"It's been a brilliant day for the Liberal Democrats and a better day for the community.

"We've been on the doorstep and people have told us we love what you're doing, you're working in partnership with other parties and you're getting things done."

He said continuing to work in coalition as the West Oxfordshire Alliance "is the natural thing to do".

Oxfordshire County Council's Lib Dem leader Liz Leffman easily held her Charlbury and Finstock seat on the district council with 785 votes.

Former county cabinet member for travel and WODC deputy leader Duncan Enright held Witney East for Labour with a massive 1,019 votes.

Ian Hudspeth, who was leader of the Oxfordshire County Council for nine years between 2012 and May 2021, failed to win Woodstock and Bladon which was held by the Lib Dems.
