A tenant has been left fearing for his safety after "threats to kill" and smashed windows at his temporary accommodation as he implores the council to move him on.

Aiden Lee, of Bonar Road in Oxford, approached the city council for help in response to the smashing of windows and strewing of rubbish at his home.

Mr Lee added that a man known to himself and his partner, who they had been "having issues with for a while", had come to the house with "threats to kill".

The 25-year-old, who was previously homeless, said: "I went to Oxford City Council for a place of safety.

"We're very concerned. We've had threats to kill and to have my partner raped.

"Since we contacted the council I've heard nothing from them.

"They're keeping us in an unsafe property.

"The windows don't have locks on them and the front door is difficult to close."

Mr Lee said he has been "fighting the council since he was 18 years old" in connection with securing accommodation due to his homelessness.

Thames Valley Police has confirmed it is investigating a criminal damage and public order incident in Bonar Road shortly before 9pm on Sunday, April 7.

A spokesman added: “Anyone with information should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting the reference number 43240158960.

“Alternatively, provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website.”

Mr Lee said he had got in contact with a council homeless prevention officer already known to him following the Bonar Road ordeal.

He added: "It's difficult to get hold of anyone at the council.

"They said they'd look at options but I've not heard anything since then.

"They moved me into the property but I didn't know how to do anything so ended up in rent arrears.

"It's not nice to feel unsafe in your own home.

"I don't care whether I live in a cardboard box personally but my partner needs a home.

"Personally I couldn't care where I sleep."

Mr Lee said he had become effectively homeless at the age of 18 after leaving a youth hostel, which he had been sent to after being removed from his family home, and going to live and work "in and out of the fairgrounds".

He added: "I was a modern day slavery victim.

"We'd be given new clothes and told to only put them on if anyone came."

At the age of 21, the Bonar Road resident sought council accommodation which was eventually given.

He said he was currently not working and had been signed off for two years because of depression and anxiety and had found the council unclear in its communication and difficult to get hold of.

UK government legislation says local authorities must make sure that people who live in their areas "receive services that prevent their care needs from becoming more serious, or delay the impact of their needs".

Mr Lee concluded: "We're scared and we're not.

"We know we're safe however it's more the uncertainty.

"I suffer with my mental health and so does my partner."

A city council spokesman said: "Oxford City Council is currently housing Mr Lee in temporary accommodation.

"He has raised concerns with us on this matter and are working with him to ensure his safety."
