It was a case of so near yet so far for Oxford's Terrorhurtz team in the new-look Robot Wars episode one.

The popular robot fighting series has returned to our screens following its success in the late 1990s.

The Terrorhurtz team are veterans from the original series but returned for the new revamped show, now hosted by Dara O'Briain and Angela Scanlon.

Terrorhurtz is a polycarbonate-armoured robot with the biggest axe in the competition - a 90cm long, Titanium, high-power axe, which fires at 100mph and generates one tonne of force.

Comprised on John Reid and Nick Lynch, the team made it through the first group battle and into the head-to-head stage.

Despite problems with its axe weapon, the robot was able to beat tournament favourite Carbide. But the malfunctioning weapon meant it was left helpless in the next round as bot Behemoth flipped it over and dispatched it into the pit.

It all came down to the final head-to-head versus team Nuts, which had taken a battering in the previous round at the hands of Carbide.

With the axe fixed the robot went on the attack, but Terrorhurtz could not land a killer blow, instead winning the round on points - leaving it tied with Behemoth.

But as it lost to Behemoth in its head-to head, the team had to head home disappointed.

The series aired last night on BBC Two and continues on Sunday at 8pm.
