A WOMAN went into labour on a bus while it was stuck in traffic after police closed a road in Barton.

The driver of the number 8 Oxford Bus Company service called an ambulance for the pregnant woman on board at about 5pm yesterday.

It is understood the ambulance arrived a transported the woman to the John Radcliffe hospital.

The situation arose when neighbourhood officers closed Barton Village Road in the estate following an assault on an Iceland van driver.

Force spokesman Connie Primmer told the Oxford Mail their was an altercation involving the occupants of two vehicles at about 4.30pm.

She said: "A man aged in his thirties was assaulted. He sustained injuries to his face and head and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment."

And in the mist of the drama while the bus was stuck at a standstill, the woman who is yet to be identified, raised the alarm that her baby was coming.

Oxford Bus Company spokesman Andy Morison confirmed the driver called an ambulance for the pregnant woman.

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Oxford on suspicion of common assault and a 22-year-old man from Oxford on suspicion of ABH assault.

They have both been bailed until July 23.
