ROYAL fans can win a place on the roof of Abingdon Museum for the town's traditional bun-throwing ceremony.

Bun throwing is back on Saturday, June 11 at 7pm to mark the Queen's official 90th birthday.

It's the first time such a ceremony has been held since 2012, when the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated.

According to tradition only town councillors can climb to the roof of the museum opposite the Market Place to throw buns to the crowd below but in 2012 town councillor Mike Badcock came up with the idea of staging a bun-throwing competition for the public.

It will be held again on Monday, at Abingdon Vale Cricket Club and the winners will be able to join councillors on the roof.

Mr Badcock, whose daughter Alice is town mayor and will throw the first bun on June 11, said: "We are all looking forward to the bun-throwing competition.

"Two men and two women will be chosen as winners and they will be able to join the councillors for the Queen's birthday celebrations.

"In the past I remember throwing a bun right across the Market Place and if it hit an air current near the NatWest it would go over the roofs but I don't think I will be able to do that now."

The bun-throwing competition at the cricket club in Culham Road runs from 2pm to 4pm.

Abingdon has marked major Royal occasions with bun throwing ever since the 1761 coronation of King George III.
