Former Oxford United star Joey Beauchamp knows only to well that nerves will be rife around the Kassam Stadium tomorrow.

For the midfielder was almost in the exact same position himself 20 seasons ago when the U's needed to beat Peterborough at the Manor Ground in Headington.

Luckily, they did and the 45-year-old predicts Michael Appleton's side will do the same against Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow afternoon.

Beauchamp, who lives in Kidlington said United had the quality but had to keep calm and play the way which has brought them to this position.

He added: "I remember we were confident of getting promotion in 96 because we had gone a good run of games.

"On the day of the Peterbrough game I remember the nerves round the whole ground and in the dressing room.

"You need a bit of luck and we got that with the own goal, then we won quite comfortably."

Beauchamp said this was the best Oxford side he had seen in recent years and believed they deserved to go up.

He added he would be at the Kassam to spur on the U's.

He said: "This is a complete team, they are good to watch and have some match winners.

"It will be a difficult game. It's a local derby and a similar fixture to Chelsea and Tottenham. Wycombe will want to come and spoil the party.

"If we ended the season with nothing it would be a disaster, but I'm quite optimistic the players will get a result, they certainly deserve it."
