NEUROSCIENTIST Professor Colin Blakemore visited Buckingham Palace to receive a knighthood from the Princess Royal.

Sir Colin, 70, Emeritus Professor of Neuroscience at Oxford University, was awarded the honour in June in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The investiture ceremony took place on Tuesday. The former chief executive of the Medical Research Council said in June he was “delighted and surprised” to be knighted.

Sir Colin, who lives in Oxford with wife Andree, added on Wednesday: “I was very pleased to receive this recognition.

“I was particularly pleased that the citation was for my contributions to scientific research, policy and outreach.”

The professor is director of the Centre for the Study of the Senses at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study.

For several years he was targeted by animal rights activists because of his research work.
